The Twente oak landscape

Springendal: the pride of Twente

About a quarter of an hour's drive away lies the Springendal, north of Ootmarsum near Hezingen and Mander. Staatsbosbeheer, the Dutch forestry service, calls it the pride of Twente, and that is no exaggeration: spring-fed brooks welling up from the ice-age ridge, picturesque ponds, little waterfalls and narrow streams between woods, heath and old farmhouses.

It is best explored on foot. The Boswachterspad (forest ranger's trail) of Staatsbosbeheer is 16.5 kilometres long and starts at the Brandtoren car park on the Brandtorenweg in Hezingen. Prefer something shorter? There are also shorter loops past the spring ponds.

Combine it with lunch in Ootmarsum and end the day with a treatment by Lawan. Or choose the Outdoors and unwind package.

Along the way

  • The boardwalk through the brook valley, past the small spring pond
  • With some luck, a kingfisher at the large spring pond
  • Hoeve Springendal, farmed by the Brunninkhuis family since 1500
  • From spring to autumn, a flock of sheep on the Paardenslenkte
  • The valley of the Mosbeek, with hay meadows, heath and hedgerows
  • Burial mounds from the Stone Age and Bronze Age

In the village: the Oortman mill

Less than 200 metres from our house stands the Oortmanmolen, a windmill. It was built in 1779 in Tjamsweer near Appingedam. In 1910 the miller Johannes Oortman had it shipped to Lattrop and rebuilt as a corn mill.

Since 1981 the Oortmanmolen foundation has looked after the mill. You can buy flour there for pancakes and bread. Our room De Molen looks out on it.

The mill's name board: anno 1779, Oortman-möl
